Murray Gold - All the Strange, Strange Creatures
30 Days of New Doctor Who | 29. Favorite Music
I decided to not include series five in this, mostly because the official soundtrack hasn’t been released yet (curse you, November!) and I want to use quality mp3s for this that came straight from the CDs. However, I will say that series five, based on the episodes alone and watching the Proms special, is probably my favorite score to date. Prior to series five, that honor had been previously held by series three, which this piece of score was first introduced in. To me, when I think of Gold’s music for this show during the RTD years, this is the first track that comes to mind. I loved many of the the other themes (particularly the companion themes, the score from “The Girl in the Fireplace”, and obviously “Doomsday”), but I don’t know. This piece of score is Doctor Who. Hands down. This track was part of the reason why I went through a phase about three years back for a week or so in which I was watching “The Sound of Drums” on repeat for the music alone (a trend I later repeated earlier this spring with “The Eleventh Hour”).
On a related note, I’ve always really enjoyed Gold’s work on this show. I love seeing television shows employing full orchestras as opposed to stock, digital score. It’s my favorite thing.

This CD quickly follows the release of the Specials set a couple of months before on 20th September.
